Origins & Education

Born in 1956 in Algiers, Achour Madi completed his early education at Lycée Thaalibiya in Hussein-Dey before joining the National Institute of Hydrocarbons in Boumerdes, where he obtained his Engineering degree in Petroleum Geology & Oil Exploration (1976-1981). He then pursued higher education in Canada, earning a PhD in Geology from the University of Laval, Quebec (1990-1994), after also undertaking doctoral studies at McGill University in Montreal (1990-1994).

Scientific Career

Dr. Madi is a multi-disciplinary geoscientist with more than 35 years of experience in the oil industry. Holding a PhD in Carbonate Sedimentology & Diagenesis, he has published over 15 articles in prestigious journals such as AAPG Bulletin, Sedimentology, Facies, SPE, and other recognized scientific publications. He is considered a renowned expert in carbonate sedimentology and exploration of carbonate reservoirs.

His career is marked by an impressive journey within major oil companies (Petro-Canada, Occidental) where he provided technical, operational, and managerial leadership. Dr. Madi is recognized as an "Oil Finder" with a proven track record in the industry. He has been involved in numerous oil and gas exploration projects in more than 40 countries, including Canada, Mexico, USA, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Iran, Pakistan, Oman, Sudan, Cameroon, Nigeria, Tanzania, Belize, Albania, France, Colombia, and Guatemala.

He possesses in-depth knowledge of almost all basins, fields, and geological settings around the globe, including North and South America, the Gulf of Mexico, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, North, East, and West Africa, as well as Europe.

Dr. Madi has been an active member since 1990 of several prestigious professional associations, including AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists), CSPG (Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists), SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers), and APEGA (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta).

As an accomplished entrepreneur, he has co-founded and managed three international oil companies: Madison PetroGas (2007-2012), Allied Petroleum Exploration (APEX) (2011-2022), and more recently Emerald Petroleum, which operates an exploration concession in Central America. His current company, Emerald Petroleum Ltd, whose websites are www.emeraldres.ca and www.emeraldevaluation.com, is the only Canadian company pre-qualified in January 2024 by Sonatrach's Exploration Division to provide assistance in technical studies.

Distinctions & Recognition

Dr. Madi has developed innovative algorithms and software to identify shale gas/tight oil plays and to estimate resources of unconventional plays. His work, published in the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) in 2015, established a sophisticated and innovative methodology for "Estimating Oil & Gas Reserves of Unconventional Plays/Reservoirs." This AI-powered methodology provides accurate estimates in less than two minutes after data/parameter input.

He has also developed another software that directly provides TOC (Total Organic Content) from logs, which allows the identification of petroleum source rocks in intervals and wells where sampling wasn't done, saving time and significant financial resources.

Dr. Madi has identified and characterized tight oil plays in many countries, including Southeast Saskatchewan (Canada), North Dakota (USA), Paris Basin (France), Rub al Khali Basin (Oman, Saudi Arabia), Northeast Algeria, and Southern Mexico.

Dr. Madi's expertise in frontier exploration and subtle traps, volume and risk assessment of conventional & unconventional plays, prospect maturation, exploration strategy, concession capture, carbonate sedimentology & diagenesis has had a significant impact on the global oil industry.

His innovative methodology for estimating oil and gas reserves of unconventional plays, published in 2015, represents a major advancement in the field, offering unprecedented accuracy and speed in resource assessment. This scientific contribution has considerably improved the efficiency of hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation worldwide.
