Origins & Education
Taha Merghoub was born and raised in Béni Izguen, a village in the wilaya of Ghardaïa, in the heart of the M'zab Valley in Algeria. The son of a physician, he was inspired by science and medicine from an early age, nurturing ambitions to dedicate himself to scientific research.
His schooling took place entirely within the Algerian public education system. After successful primary and secondary studies, he continued his education at Moufdi Zakaria High School, where he obtained his Science Baccalaureate in 1987.
Eager to deepen his knowledge, Taha Merghoub then went to Algiers to attend the University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene (USTHB). There, he earned his Diploma of Higher Studies (DES) in genetics, marking the beginning of his scientific career. His first steps in research were particularly fruitful when he discovered a variant of hemoglobin D-Ouled Rabah, a finding that would later be published in the European Journal of Human Genetics.
Continuing his academic journey in France, he completed a master's degree in biology and applied genetics at the University of Paris 7, where he became interested in hepatic differentiation. His academic excellence enabled him to obtain a PhD in human genetics with the highest distinction from the University of Paris. His thesis focused on studying genetic polymorphism in the fetal hemoglobin gene in patients with sickle cell anemia and thalassemia. His findings provided valuable insight into the correlation between genotypes and phenotypes in these pathologies.
Scientific Career
After obtaining his doctorate, Taha Merghoub pursued his research career in the United States, where he conducted his postdoctoral research under the guidance of Dr. Pier Paolo Pandolfi at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) in New York. During this period, he dedicated himself to characterizing the transcriptional properties of the ZBTB7 gene and studying its role during development. He also actively participated in creating laboratory models for acute promyelocytic leukemia, thus deepening his knowledge and experience in genetics.
Subsequently, Dr. Merghoub joined the Alan Houghton Laboratory as a Senior Research Scientist, where he began to study tumor immunity. He developed mouse models of melanoma that mimic different stages of human disease clinically, pathologically, and genetically. These models allowed him to evaluate new immunotherapies at different stages of tumor progression.
His career at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center saw remarkable progression. He first became an assistant attending biologist in the melanoma and sarcoma service, then assumed the direction of a research laboratory in partnership with Dr. Wolchok. He was subsequently promoted to associate attending in the melanoma and immunotherapeutic service, before becoming a full member of the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program (HOPP) department at MSK.
As a researcher member of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, he led the melanoma disease management team and the immunotherapeutic group tissue bank at MSK, thus contributing significantly to the advancement of research in this field.
In September 2022, Dr. Merghoub was appointed to his current position at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM), where he directs a translational tumor immunology laboratory. His current research focuses on developing potential immune-based therapies to treat cancer. He is also studying the pathogenesis and treatment of melanoma, while developing tools to study melanoma and immune responses in various cancers. His work is characterized by strong collaboration within the institution and with multiple entities across different disciplines.
