Mathematician, Bioinformatics Researcher, and Entrepreneur

Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Nuritas, Ireland

Origins & Education

Nora Khaldi was born in Algeria, in the wilaya of Tebessa, coming from a very old Nememcha family (Chaouiya). Born to an Irish mother and a Franco-Algerian father, she grew up in Algeria where she began her studies before leaving for Ireland at the age of 14 to pursue her academic ambitions.

From a young age, Nora showed a marked interest in mathematics and nurtured a dream of improving human health. This dual interest in exact sciences and biology led her to develop a career at the intersection of these two fields.

Her brilliant academic journey led her to obtain a PhD in mathematics, and then to specialize in molecular evolution and bioinformatics. As she herself expressed: "My background is purely mathematical and I have always been a big fan of biology, so I looked for something that could combine the two disciplines that are generally very separate."

Scientific Career

After her studies, Nora Khaldi turned to research in bioinformatics, a field in which she quickly became a global reference. Her research primarily focused on protein evolution and comparative genomics, areas that harmoniously combine her mathematical skills and interest in biology.

Throughout her career, she has led international research teams in both academic and industrial contexts, developing recognized expertise in the discovery and commercialization of new molecules. Her innovative scientific approach has led her to collaborate with major companies in the food industry, notably the multinational Nestlé.

Nora Khaldi has made several major scientific breakthroughs. She was the first scientist to demonstrate gene transfer between multicellular species, a natural phenomenon that occurred millions of years ago. This revolutionary discovery has called into question many of the phylogenetic methods currently in use. She was also a pioneer in demonstrating that fungal species could exchange chemicals to outcompete other species.

Her work has also led her to discover new drugs made from molecules present in certain foods, particularly medications that help fight diabetes or stabilize its progression. Some of her scientific publications are among the top 2% of cited articles in the fields of biology and medicine.

In 2014, taking a new step in her career, Nora Khaldi founded Nuritas, a revolutionary startup that became the first company in the world to introduce artificial intelligence to the food arena. Nuritas's goal is to create the future of food and personalized nutrition, in short, the future of health. This company combines life sciences and artificial intelligence to extract DNA and protein data from plant material, thus opening new perspectives for human health.

Distinctions & Recognition

The excellence and innovation of Nora Khaldi's work have earned her numerous international distinctions. She is an award-winning TEDx speaker, and her revolutionary vision has been recognized by prestigious organizations such as Forbes, Wired, and the European Commission.

Her startup, Nuritas, has also received significant recognitions, being notably classified among the 21 most innovative startups in the world, alongside companies like Uber. This entrepreneurial success has led Nora to be nicknamed "the woman of the decade" in Ireland, testifying to the considerable impact of her contributions to the development of the pharmaceutical industry and research in bioinformatics.

Impact & Influence

The impact of Nora Khaldi's work extends well beyond the academic world, touching fields as varied as health, food, and technology. Her innovative approach, combining mathematics, biology, and artificial intelligence, has opened new pathways for the discovery of bioactive molecules in our daily diet.

By founding Nuritas, she created a platform that revolutionizes the way we approach nutrition and health. The company uses machine learning algorithms to identify and extract peptides (protein fragments) with health-beneficial properties from common foods, thus offering natural alternatives to traditional medications.

Her vision of personalizing nutrition according to the specific needs of each individual represents a paradigm shift in our approach to preventive health. By democratizing access to personalized nutrients, she contributes to a future where food could play an even more crucial role in the prevention and treatment of diseases.

Furthermore, as a female scientist and entrepreneur of Algerian origin who has succeeded on the international stage, Nora Khaldi constitutes an inspiring model for younger generations, particularly for young women interested in scientific careers. Her journey demonstrates that with passion, determination, and innovation, it is possible to transform challenges into opportunities and contribute significantly to the improvement of global health.
