Origins & Education

Mourad Debbabi is originally from Algeria, where he began his academic journey. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Constantine in 1989, already demonstrating exceptional aptitude in the field of computer science.

Continuing his academic excellence, he then moved to France for his higher education. At Paris-XI Orsay University, he earned his Master's degree and then his Ph.D. in computer science in 1994. His multidisciplinary and international training enabled him to develop deep expertise in several cutting-edge areas of computer science, notably cybersecurity, formal methods, and programming languages.

Scientific Career

Professor Debbabi's career is marked by diverse experiences at prestigious institutions around the world. Prior to his current position, he worked as a Permanent Researcher at the Bull Corporate Research Center in Paris, France, where he was able to apply his theoretical knowledge in an industrial context.

His professional journey then took him to the United States, where he served as a Research Associate at the Computer Science Department of Stanford University in California, a Senior Scientist at the General Electric Research Center in New York, and a Senior Scientist at the Panasonic Information and Network Technologies Laboratory in Princeton, New Jersey.

Returning to Canada, he held the position of Associate Professor with the Computer Science Department at Laval University before joining Concordia University, where he is currently a Full Professor with the Concordia Institute for Information Systems Engineering and the Dean of the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science.

At Concordia University, he is the Founder and Director of the Security Research Centre, demonstrating his commitment to advancing knowledge in the field of cybersecurity. He also holds the Hydro-Quebec Hitachi Senior Industrial Research Chair in Smart Grid Security and the Hon. Concordia Research Chair Tier I in Information Systems Security.

As a Founding Member and the Executive Director of the National Cybersecurity Consortium, he leads the CyberSecurity Innovation Network Program, thus helping to shape the future of computer security in Canada.

His scientific activity is exceptionally prolific, with the publication of seven books and more than 300 peer-reviewed research articles in international journals and conferences. His work covers a wide range of topics, including cybersecurity, cyber forensics, smart grid security, privacy, cryptographic protocols, cyber threat intelligence, malware analysis, reverse engineering, as well as the specification and verification of safety-critical systems.

As a dedicated academic mentor, he has successfully supervised 35 Ph.D. students, 76 master's students, and 15 Postdoctoral Fellows, thus contributing to the training of the next generation of computer security experts.
