Full Professor in Artificial Intelligence Lab GREYC-CNRS, University of Caen Normandy, France |
Origins & Education
Born in 1966 in Constantine, Algeria, Maroua Bouzid began her academic journey in her native country. She earned her "Ingénieur d'État" degree (equivalent to a Master's degree in Engineering) in Computer Science from the University of Constantine in 1990, already demonstrating a pronounced talent for computer sciences. Eager to deepen her knowledge and pursue a career in research, she subsequently moved to France to continue her higher education. This transition marked the beginning of an exemplary academic career that would lead her to become a recognized expert in the field of artificial intelligence, particularly in temporal and spatio-temporal reasoning.
Scientific Career
Maroua Bouzid's scientific career is characterized by steady progression and significant contributions to the field of artificial intelligence. After obtaining her engineering degree in Algeria, she continued her studies in France where she earned a Master's degree (D.E.A.) from the University of Nancy 1 in 1991. She then completed her PhD in 1995 at the same university, specializing in temporal reasoning, a fundamental area of artificial intelligence.
Her career as a researcher and professor began in 1996 at the University of Artois in Lens, where she held the position of Associate Professor until 2002. She then joined the University of Caen, still as an Associate Professor, from 2002 to 2009. Her academic excellence and research contributions enabled her to obtain her "Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches" (HDR, the highest academic qualification in France) in 2006 from the University of Caen, with a specialization in spatio-temporal reasoning. This major milestone in her career paved the way for her appointment as a Full Professor at the University of Caen in 2009, a position she has held since.
At the GREYC laboratory (Research Group in Computer Science, Image, Automation and Instrumentation of Caen), a joint research unit associated with the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), she leads cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence. Her work primarily focuses on temporal and spatio-temporal reasoning, essential domains for many modern applications such as robotics, autonomous systems, automated planning, and temporal data analysis.
Distinctions & Recognition
Throughout her career, Professor Bouzid has received various recognitions for her significant contributions to the field of artificial intelligence. Her appointment as a Full Professor is itself an important recognition of her expertise and scientific leadership. As a researcher at the GREYC-CNRS laboratory, she collaborates with international teams and actively participates in advancing knowledge in temporal and spatio-temporal reasoning.
Her role within the scientific community also extends to supervising numerous doctoral students and participating in various scientific committees for international conferences. She is regularly called upon as an expert to evaluate research projects and scientific papers in her field of specialty, thus attesting to the recognition of her expertise by her peers at the international level.
Impact & Influence
Maroua Bouzid's research work has a significant impact in the field of artificial intelligence, particularly in temporal and spatio-temporal reasoning. These domains are fundamental to many modern applications that require a precise understanding and modeling of temporal and spatial aspects of the problems being addressed.
Her contributions have advanced research on formal methods for representing and reasoning about time and space, which is essential for applications such as automated planning, decision support systems, autonomous robotics, and geographic information systems. By developing algorithms and models to handle temporal and spatial uncertainty, her work has helped improve the robustness and efficiency of artificial intelligence systems in complex and dynamic environments.
As a professor, her influence also extends to training the next generation of researchers and engineers in artificial intelligence. Through her teaching and supervision of doctoral students, she not only transmits her knowledge but also her rigorous and innovative vision of computer science research.
